What Is Fatty Liver Disease?
Also called hepatic steatosis, fatty liver disease occurs when excess fat builds up in liver cells. It ranges from simple steatosis (benign) to steatohepatitis (inflammation).
Why Do I Need Evaluation?
You may be assessed if you have:
- Abnormal liver enzymes on blood tests
- Ultrasound/MRI showing fat in the liver
- Risk factors: obesity, diabetes, high cholesterol, metabolic syndrome
How Should I Prepare?
- Fasting: 6 hours before blood tests.
- Medications: Bring a list of all current drugs, including supplements.
- Imaging: No special prep for ultrasound; follow instructions for MRI if ordered.
What Happens During Evaluation & Treatment?
- Blood work: Liver function tests, lipid profile, glucose.
- Imaging: Ultrasound elastography or MRI to quantify fat and stiffness.
- Lifestyle changes:
- Diet: Mediterranean or low-carb; reduce saturated fats and sugars.
- Exercise: ≥150 minutes/week moderate activity.
- Medications: May include vitamin E or pioglitazone and newer medication such as resmitrom, and weighht loss medications (not included in the package) in select patients.
What Can I Expect Afterwards?
- Weight loss of 5–10% can improve liver fat.
- Repeat labs/imaging every 6–12 months to monitor progress.
Risks & Possible Complications
- Progression to fibrosis or cirrhosis (10–20%)
- Increased risk of cardiovascular disease
Follow-Up
- Clinic visits every 3–6 months for labs and lifestyle coaching.
- Referral to hepatology if signs of advanced fibrosis
