Why Do I Need Screening?
- Chronic H. pylori infection
- Family history of gastric cancer
- Persistent dyspepsia
How Should I Prepare?
- Fasting 6 hours before endoscopy.
- Continue PPIs unless instructed to stop 2 weeks prior.
What Happens During Endoscopy?
- Sedation administered.
- Biopsies taken from the antrum, body, and incisura of the stomach.
- Duration: 10–20 minutes.
What Can I Expect Afterwards?
- Recovery for 30–60 minutes.
- Resume clear liquids then light diet.
Risks & Possible Complications
- Minor bleeding at biopsy sites (<1%)
- Perforation (<0.1%)
Follow-Up
- GIM without dysplasia: endoscopy every 3 years.
- GIM with dysplasia: refer to gastroenterologist for individualized surveillance.
