Why it’s done
• Persistent vomiting, failure to thrive
• Suspected celiac disease, eosinophilic esophagitis
• Unexplained anemia or upper-GI bleeding

Preparation
• NPO for 6–8 hours (clear fluids up to 2 hours before)
• Pre-procedure anesthesia evaluation

Procedure
• Under general anesthesia, a small endoscope examines the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum
• Biopsies may be taken

Afterwards
• Recovery in pediatric recovery area until awake
• Start clear liquids, advance per physician’s orders

Risks
• Sore throat, mild discomfort
• Rare bleeding or perforation
