Targeted imaging and blood tests to detect pancreatic cancer early in high-risk individuals.
Why Do I Need Screening?
- Strong family history of pancreatic cancer
- Genetic syndromes (e.g., BRCA, Lynch syndrome)
- Chronic pancreatitis
How Should I Prepare?
- Fasting 6 hours before imaging if CT or MRI is used.
- No special prep for blood tests (CA 19-9 marker).
What Happens During Screening?
- Imaging: MRI/MRCP or endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) to visualize the pancreas.
- Blood Test: CA 19-9 tumor-marker measurement.
- Duration: 30–60 minutes.
What Can I Expect Afterwards?
- Resume normal diet and activities immediately.
- Minor discomfort from IV insertion.
Risks & Possible Complications
- Contrast reaction (rare) with CT/MRI
- Sedation risks if EUS performed (<1%)
Follow-Up
- Annual imaging and CA 19-9 if high risk.
- Genetic counseling as indicated.
