What Is Periampullary Carcinoma?

Tumor arising at the ampulla of Vater, where bile and pancreatic ducts meet the duodenum.

Why Do I Need Evaluation/Treatment?

Symptoms include jaundice, pancreatitis, or weight loss.

How Should I Prepare?

  • Imaging: CT/MRI; MRCP if needed.
  • Endoscopy: ERCP/EUS for biopsy and stent placement.

What Happens During Treatment?

  • Surgical: Pancreaticoduodenectomy (Whipple).
  • Adjuvant: Chemotherapy/radiation based on pathology.

What Can I Expect Afterwards?

  • Hospital stay 7–10 days.
  • Nutritional support and enzyme supplements.

Risks & Possible Complications

  • Leak or fistula (10–15%)
  • Delayed gastric emptying (20–30%)

Follow-Up

  • Imaging every 3 months for 2 years.
  • Tumor-marker monitoring.
