What Is Small Bowel Cancer?

A rare malignancy of the small intestine (duodenum, jejunum, ileum).

Why Do I Need Evaluation/Treatment?

Symptoms include:

  • Abdominal pain or obstruction
  • Gastrointestinal bleeding
  • Weight loss

How Should I Prepare?

  • Imaging: CT/MR enterography; no special prep for CT.
  • Endoscopy: Double-balloon enteroscopy prep similar to colonoscopy.

What Happens During Diagnosis & Treatment?

  • Enteroscopy with biopsy.
  • Surgery: Segmental resection of affected bowel with clear margins.
  • Adjuvant therapy: Chemotherapy as indicated by tumor type and stage.

What Can I Expect Afterwards?

  • Hospital stay 5–7 days post-resection.
  • Resume liquids then solids over 1–2 weeks.

Risks & Possible Complications

  • Anastomotic leak (2–5%)
  • Short-bowel syndrome if extensive resection

Follow-Up

  • Imaging every 6–12 months.
  • Nutritional and vitamin monitoring.
