What Is STER?

An advanced endoscopic technique creating a submucosal tunnel to resect lesions in the esophagus or upper GI wall.

Why Do I Need STER?

Indicated for small submucosal tumors (leiomyoma, GIST) ≤3 cm in muscularis propria.

How Should I Prepare?

  • Fasting 8 hours.
  • Consent for general anesthesia and advanced endoscopy.

What Happens During the Procedure?

  • Creation of mucosal entry point; submucosal tunneling to lesion.
  • En bloc tumor excision; closure of entry with clips.
  • Duration: 60–120 minutes.

What Can I Expect Afterwards?

  • Hospital admission 1–2 days.
  • Liquid diet for 1–2 days; advance as tolerated.

Risks & Possible Complications

  • Perforation (3–5%)
  • Bleeding (5–10%)
  • Infection in tunnel tract (<5%)

Follow-Up

  • Surveillance endoscopy in 3–6 months.
  • Imaging if high-risk histology.
