What Is Small Bowel Cancer?
A rare malignancy of the small intestine (duodenum, jejunum, ileum).
Why Do I Need Evaluation/Treatment?
Symptoms include:
- Abdominal pain or obstruction
- Gastrointestinal bleeding
- Weight loss
How Should I Prepare?
- Imaging: CT/MR enterography; no special prep for CT.
- Endoscopy: Double-balloon enteroscopy prep similar to colonoscopy.
What Happens During Diagnosis & Treatment?
- Enteroscopy with biopsy.
- Surgery: Segmental resection of affected bowel with clear margins.
- Adjuvant therapy: Chemotherapy as indicated by tumor type and stage.
What Can I Expect Afterwards?
- Hospital stay 5–7 days post-resection.
- Resume liquids then solids over 1–2 weeks.
Risks & Possible Complications
- Anastomotic leak (2–5%)
- Short-bowel syndrome if extensive resection
Follow-Up
- Imaging every 6–12 months.
- Nutritional and vitamin monitoring.
