What Is NERD?
A subtype of GERD with typical reflux symptoms but no visible esophageal erosions on endoscopy.
Why Do I Need Treatment?
Though non-erosive, NERD significantly impacts quality of life and may progress without therapy.
Treatment
- PPI once daily for 8–12 weeks.
- Adjunct: alginate formulations, H2 blockers at night.
- Lifestyle: same as GERD.
What Can I Expect Afterwards?
- Symptom relief in 2–4 weeks.
- Some may require long-term maintenance PPI.
Risks & Possible Complications
- PPI side effects as above.
Follow-Up
- Reassess if symptoms persist despite optimized therapy.

A patient information leaflet
What Is Eosinophilic Esophagitis (EoE)?
Chronic immune-mediated esophageal disease marked by eosinophil infiltration, causing dysphagia and food impaction.
Why Do I Need Treatment?
Untreated EoE can lead to strictures, rings, and impaired swallowing.
Treatment
- Dietary: Elimination of common allergens (six-food elimination diet).
- Medical: Topical steroids (fluticasone, budesonide).
- Endoscopic: Esophageal dilation for strictures.
What Can I Expect Afterwards?
- Symptom improvement in weeks.
- Regular monitoring via endoscopy and biopsies.
Risks & Possible Complications
- Stricture recurrence requiring repeat dilation.
- Oral candidiasis from topical steroids.
Follow-Up
- Endoscopy every 6–12 months to assess histologic response.
