What Is Hemochromatosis?

A genetic disorder causing iron overload in liver, heart, and pancreas.

Why Do I Need Treatment?

To prevent cirrhosis, cardiomyopathy, diabetes, and arthritis.

How Should I Prepare?

  • Blood tests: serum ferritin, transferrin saturation, genetic testing.
  • MRI to quantify liver iron.

What Happens During Treatment?

  • Phlebotomy: weekly removal of 500 mL blood until iron normalized.
  • Maintenance: phlebotomy every 2–4 months.
  • Avoid iron supplements and high-iron foods.

What Can I Expect Afterwards?

  • Fatigue and skin hyperpigmentation improve over months.
  • Long-term monitoring of organ function.

Risks & Possible Complications

  • Anemia if over-phlebotomized
  • Hypotension or dizziness during phlebotomy

Follow-Up

  • Ferritin and transferrin saturation every 3–6 months.
  • Annual liver function tests.
