What Is ERCP for CBD?
Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography uses an endoscope and fluoroscopy to diagnose and treat CBD stones, strictures, and leaks.
Why Do I Need ERCP?
Indications include:
- CBD stones, cholangitis
- Biliary strictures or leaks
- Stent placement or removal
How Should I Prepare?
- Fasting 8 hours.
- Stop anticoagulants per protocol.
What Happens During the Procedure?
- Sedation is given.
- Cannulation of the papilla; contrast injected under X-ray.
- Sphincterotomy, stone extraction, dilation, or stent placement performed.
What Can I Expect Afterwards?
- Observation for 4–6 hours.
- Clear liquids first; advance diet gradually.
Risks & Possible Complications
- Pancreatitis (5–10%)
- Bleeding (2–5%)
- Perforation (<1%)
Follow-Up
- Ultrasound to confirm stone clearance.
Stent exchange/removal in 4–6 weeks if placed
